How to Change Your Keyboard Language for Talkio
Last updated on
Some writing exercises in Talkio ask you to type in the language you are learning. If that language uses letters or a writing system that is not available on your current keyboard, you may need to add or switch your device’s keyboard language before completing the exercise.
Talkio uses the keyboard language and layout selected on your device. Changing your keyboard does not change your Talkio practice language or your device’s display language. It only lets you type the characters needed for the writing exercise.
Quickly switch between installed keyboards
- Windows: Hold the Windows key and press Space.
- Mac: Select the Input menu in the menu bar, or press Control + Space if that shortcut is enabled.
- iPhone or iPad: While typing, touch and hold the globe or emoji key, then select a keyboard.
- Android with Gboard: Touch and hold the space bar, or tap the globe key.
If the language you need is not listed, follow the instructions for your device below.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Go to Time & language → Language & region.
- Next to your preferred language, select the three dots, then Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Choose the keyboard layout you want.
- Return to Talkio and switch layouts with Windows key + Space.
If the keyboard is not available, add its language under Preferred languages first. See Microsoft’s keyboard-language instructions.
Mac
- Open the Apple menu → System Settings.
- Select Keyboard.
- Under Text Input, select Edit.
- Select the plus (+) button and search for the language you want.
- Choose an input source or layout, then select Add.
- Use the Input menu in the menu bar to switch keyboards.
See Apple’s instructions for writing in another language on Mac.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Go to General → Keyboard → Keyboards.
- Select Add New Keyboard.
- Choose the language you want.

See Apple’s iPhone and iPad keyboard instructions.
Android with Gboard
- Open your device’s Settings.
- Go to System → Keyboard → On-screen keyboard.
- Select Gboard → Languages.
- Select Add keyboard, choose a language and select the layout you want.
- Select Done.
- When typing in Talkio, touch and hold the space bar to switch languages.
Menus can vary on Samsung and other Android devices. If you use a different keyboard app, open that keyboard’s language or input settings. See Google’s Gboard language instructions.
Example: typing Turkish characters
To type Turkish characters such as ğ, ş, ı, ç, ö, and ü, add a Turkish keyboard layout and select it before starting the writing activity. On Windows, Turkish Q is usually the easiest layout for people familiar with a QWERTY keyboard.
If your keyboard types unexpected characters
- Check which keyboard language is currently selected.
- Switch back to your usual layout using the shortcut for your device.
- Remember that the characters printed on a physical keyboard may not match the selected software layout.
- If autocorrect uses the wrong language, switch to the correct keyboard before typing.
